Big Idea
How does 3D printing enhance student learning?
We cannot separate our students from technology. It seems like when a child is born an electronic is immediately put in their hands. It is now part of their daily life; from old technology of game systems, cell phones, computers, tablets, to new technology of Smartboards, smart watches and now 3D printing. We have to be careful with how we use technology in the classroom. We cannot just use technology to use it; it needs to be used with a purpose to enhance students' learning. It is interesting and captivating to see an object printed with a 3D printer, but what educational value does it have? How can 3D printing not just be captivating to watch, but also provide knowledge to students in math and science? This is what I hope to uncover during my ImagineIT project.
Today may be over... but you can always start your plan for tomorrow!
3D printing is part of the "new" technology in classrooms. I have a Makerbot 3D printer and 3Doodlers in my classroom. The students really enjoy using these technologies; I enjoy using them too. I want to start using them with a purpose this year. Making hearts and flowers is nice, but what content are the students learning. I want to know how 3D printing can further the students' knowledge. I want to incorporate more of the learning behind the use of 3D printing. Instead of just creating to create, we are now going to create with a purpose.
I thought the music and images that I chose for my video really show how I want to progress my teaching. I want to go from dry and boring lectures to where the students have fun interacting in the classroom and produce projects using their own ideas. I want their projects using 3D printing to not just be items they reproduced just to use printer, but to be projects that incorporated STEM and furthered their understanding of a lesson or concept.
